Director of Export Product Development of the Ministry of Trade, Olvy Andrianita said, Indonesian spices are indeed in demand and needed by the world market, one of which is vanilla. In addition to food and beverage needs, vanilla spice is also used for the cosmetic industry. “Here, I also describe several commodities that are our advantages, for example vanilla, this vanilla is a raw material for the food and beverage industry, then cosmetics,” said Olvy in the webinar on the Diversification and Adaptation Strategy of Spice Export Products in the Period and After the Covid-19 Pandemic, Thursday (25/6).
He said the biggest importers of Indonesian vanilla spices were the United States (47.73 percent), France (18.10 percent), Germany (9.31 percent), Canada (5.80 percent), Japan (2.73 percent). , the Netherlands (2.22 percent), Mauritius East Africa (2 percent), Switzerland (1.27 percent), Australia (1.25 percent), and Italy (1.19 percent).
He explained that currently Indonesia is in second place as vanilla exporter at 8.71 percent. While the first place is occupied by Madagascar with 55.35 percent. Then in third place is France (7.43 percent), Canada (6.43 percent), and Germany (4.97 percent).
“Indonesia is the second exporter, Indonesia is still small at 8.71 percent where the main dominance is still in Madagascar. I think how we struggle to make our vanilla products better than other countries’ products,” he said.
Currently, the Ministry of Trade has a prospective export destination of selected commodities. As in 2019, it was divided into two, namely traditional and non-traditional countries.
For traditional countries, Olvy said that there are five countries whose export prospects for spices are dominated by the following countries, namely the United States with USD 144.62 million, India USD 100 million, Vietnam USD 90.25 million, China USD 47.12 million, and the Netherlands. USD 31.81 million.
“India is in the number two position, although India is actually an exporter to the world, so it is actually a competitor for us, as well as Vietnam, we export spices to Vietnam, but Vietnam is also good at spices to the world, so this is how we respond to all of this,” he said.
Meanwhile for non-traditional countries, there are Saudi Arabia USD 13.27 million, UAE USD 12.62 million, Pakistan USD 11.29 million, Canada USD 10.80 million, and Thailand USD 7.70 million.
“So this is what characterizes the prospect of exporting spice commodities at this time, so I think we can also develop other countries that have great potential, such as Eastern Europe, the splinter countries from Bosnia, including Russia,” he said.
Olvy added that it is not only the European Union that can be developed but also with countries that already have agreements with Indonesia such as the Free Trade Agreement, Mozambique, Australia, and others. “We need to act because the article is open and there is an agreement that will make it easier for us to enter the markets of these countries,” he said.
